BIOGRAPHY
Fans and friends so often compare LEA’s sound to greats like Tracy Chapman and Joni Mitchell that it seems a good starting point to describe her music. Truth be told, there are also shades of India.Arie, Ani DiFranco and Bonnie Raitt in her singing, writing and guitar playing. By infusing elements of Jazz, Country, Gospel & R&B into contemporary Folk, LEA creates a sound that is all her own.
LEA was raised in Baltimore by a father who had traveled the world playing trumpet with the soul band, Black Heat and a mother who sang with the Jones Family Gospel Singers. When LEA was in middle school, she moved with her parents to the suburbs of DC. Shortly thereafter, she “discovered” classic rock music and began teaching her self to play the acoustic guitar by writing songs. As a senior in high school, LEA studied at a classical music conservatory in Germany. While there, she sang with the jazz ensemble, Black & White and co-wrote with the British pop trio, Indigo Wild.
All of these influences and experiences make it difficult for the artist to answer the question, “What type of music do you play?” One thing is certain. LEA’s music is enjoyed by a variety of audiences who share in common an appreciation for pure, engaging vocalization, expressive guitar style, intelligent lyrics and skillful songcraft.
Those audiences include presenters at arts centers, universities, festivals, coffeehouses, nightclubs, vineyards, churches and house concerts in the US and Europe.
LEA has released 7 full-length CDS and has been repeatedly acknowledged by the Washington Area Music Association as one of the area’s Best Female Vocalist, Recording Artists and Songwriters.
